Shimla spread across the hillside beneath the mountains

The town

Queen of the Hills,
and she still knows it.

Colonial timber and tin roofs stacked up a 2,200-metre ridge, a promenade with no cars on it, deodar forest on every side, and a narrow-gauge railway that takes five hours to climb what a car does in two.

Things to do

Most of it is walkable. That's the point of staying up here.

Shimla is vertical — every shortcut is a staircase. Walking times below are from our door, at a Shimla pace rather than a Delhi one.

Mall Road

The evening ritual. Bakeries, wool shops, coffee, and a pedestrian promenade that fills up around six and stays that way till ten.

The open shoulder of the hill above the Mall, with a view clean across to the ranges. Where the town gathers.

Christ Church & the Gaiety

The neo-Gothic church of 1857 at the Ridge's edge, and the restored Victorian theatre a short walk on.

The steepest half hour in town, ending at the highest point in Shimla and a Hanuman statue you can see from everywhere. Watch your snacks — the monkeys don't ask.

When to come

Four different towns, depending on the month.

Mar – Jun
15–25°C

Rhododendron, clear mornings, the busiest months. May and June book out first — the plains are at 45°C and everyone knows where to go.

Jul – Sep
15–22°C

Monsoon. Cloud in the valley, the hills at their greenest, the lowest rates of the year. Bring a jacket and don't plan around the weather.

Oct – Nov
10–20°C

The connoisseur's season. Air scrubbed clean after the rain, snow ranges visible from the Ridge, and the crowds gone home.

Dec – Feb
0–10°C

Snow, usually from late December. New Year is the single busiest week of the Shimla year — book weeks ahead, not days.

Snow season

The week the whole ridge turns white.

First snow usually lands on Shimla in the last week of December and returns through January and February. The town gets loud, the Ridge fills up, and every room in the hills is spoken for.

If you want to be here for it, book weeks ahead. We'll tell you honestly whether snow has actually fallen before you set off — a lot of people drive up in December and find a dry ridge.

Getting here

Four ways up the hill.
